The AA, Brake and the Parliamentary Advisory Committee on Transport Safety recommend..

In a recent article The association of British insurers, the AA, Brake, the Parliamentary Advisory committee on transport safety, Roadsafe and the Royal society for the prevention of accidents has recommended to the UK government and the European commission that heavy all goods vehicles should be equipped to counter blind spots with mirrors or cameras where needed

New York Noise-News

The sound from a bbs-tek® ‘white sound’ alarm disperses faster than a standard ‘tonal’ alarm, yet City’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), currently shows only one alarm technology is acceptable for use near sensitive areas – and that’s bbs-tek®. Because trucks and other types of plant move from site to site, fitting bbs-tek® will ensure compliance no matter where the truck goes, or machine operates. ‘bbs-tek®’ uses white sound alarm technology from Brigade Electronics Inc.

APPROVED CAMERA-MONITOR SOLUTIONS FOR BLIND SPOTS

25.07.07

Brigade has a range of solutions to meet European Mirrors Directives

Brigade Electronics has received approval for its BE-300C & BE-301C side view and BE-303C front view flush mount cameras for use instead of conventional mirrors according to the European Mirrors (Devices for Indirect Vision) Directives 2003/97, EC2005/27, and 2007/38/EC.

These attractive and streamlined flush-mount cameras help solve the problem of blind spots around commercial vehicles and will provide drivers with greatly improved visibility.  Because the cameras do not need to be viewed through the windscreen, they do not – unlike conventional mirrors – themselves add to the blind spot problem.  The cameras measure just 62x42x45mm (wxdxh), and can be discreetly fitted in any convenient location on the vehicle.

Brigade Electronics marketing manager Chris Baker commented: “There are four million trucks in
Europe that need to be retro-fitted with camera-monitor systems, mirrors or other devices for indirect vision before 31 March 2009 .  Brigade, with its European-wide network of distributors, is well placed to provide them with a range of cost-effective and approved solutions. As well as our 300 series cameras, we also provide ‘Dobli’ blind spot mirrors that meet the new requirements, so we have a full and wide range of options available.

“For those operators that already have a Brigade rear view CCTV system fitted, the addition of a side view camera will be the best and lowest cost option, because this can be quickly and simply connected to the existing rear view monitor.  Equally, operators that have not yet fitted a rear view system can take this opportunity to fit a combined side view and rear view system, saving several hundred pounds on the cost of fitting these systems separately, and also optimizing space in the cab by using the one monitor for two functions.  In fact, they can even go further, with the addition of Navigation and/or Bridgeclear - our low bridge warning system – all displayed on the one monitor.  When you consider the technical options now available, conventional mirrors seem outdated and outclassed as a solution to the problem.

“Although the compliance deadline seems a long time ahead we are pointing out to customers the importance of acting now to meet the new regulations. When they are considering fitting a CCTV system we are explaining the new requirements and the advantages to be gained by our multi-function camera-monitor systems. These systems can provide either 2 in 1(rear and side view or front and side view), 3 in 1 (rear, side and front view) or 5 in 1, rear, front and side viewing plus a mobile digital recorder for accident analysis and false claim prevention coverage.”

The new vehicles legislation extends the areas to the front and both sides of Class N2 & N3 vehicles that must be visible to the driver, and the retrofit requirement extends the areas to be seen by the driver on the near side of N2 & N3 vehicles.  This increased area means operators must fit a choice of camera-monitor devices, additional mirrors, new mirrors, new glasses to the existing mirrors, or other ‘devices for indirect vision’ that cover all the additional area required by the new legislation.

The legislation is introduced as a means of reducing the toll of 400 deaths each year in
Europe in side turn collisions.  Most of these fatalities happen at low speeds, typically at road junctions and when moving off from a stationary position, with cyclists and pedestrians being particularly vulnerable.

The 125° wide-angled BE-300 series cameras deliver a clear and sharp picture of people and objects that would otherwise be ‘blind’ to the driver. They are robustly built to ensure outstanding protection against dust and water. The cameras are compatible with the company’s BE-800 series and VBV-700 series monitors.

The Dobli wide-view mirrors have been specifically designed to provide drivers with clear visibility of the area to the nearside front of the vehicle. They are fitted to the front of the truck and viewed through the windscreen.
